Your best friend is having a baby girl and you want the perfect gift. You want something unique and handmade. If you are crafty then why not paint a wood doll cradle? Begin the search for the cradle on ebay, etsy or even craigslist. Look for cradles that are well made and sturdy. If you purchase a vintage/used cradle, be sure it is in good condition with no apparent or major damage. Once you find the cradle you can get to work. Sand down the cradle and fix any cracks, etc. in the wood using a wood putty. Then choose your colors. Acrylic paints work best and there are a rainbow of colors. If your best friend has decided to decorate her little girl's room in pink and orange then you already know what colors to purchase. Deside on the design, ie. shabby chic, garden, polka dots, and draw a sketch of your ideas on a sheet of paper. This helps me to organize my thoughts as well as make very little mistakes when painting. After you have painted the cradle, use a varnish to protect the paint and brighten up the cradle.
So what about the bedding? If you created a garden themed cradle then find a material that matches your theme. If you can't sew then you can use fabric glue or even hot glue. When using any glue, be certain you don't use too much so it doesn't get all over the fabric. You can make a mattress, blanket and pillow. A little lace around the bedding adds a little more sweetness.
Once your cradle is finished you can use a large basket/cellophane bag to wrap it. Another idea is to put other items inside the cradle and then wrap it in the cellophane. Either way, decorate with ribbons that match your cradle theme. Once you are at the baby shower and your gift is sitting on the gift table others will take notice of your beautiful and unique gift. You will hear comments like, "Wow!", "How beautiful!", "Who made that?". You can feel confident that your best friend will love your heartfelt, handmade, one-of-a-kind, gift.
